Definitions
Please be cautious when using the terms avian flu and/or pandemic. They are not the same thing. Definitions of these terms are as follows.
According to www.pandemicflu.gov:
Avian (bird) flu - A highly contagious viral disease with up to 100% mortality in domestic fowl caused by influenza A virus subtypes H5 and H7. All types of birds are susceptible to the virus but outbreaks occur most often in chickens and turkeys. The infection may be carried by migratory wild birds, which can carry the virus but show no signs of disease. Humans are only rarely affected.
Pandemic - The worldwide outbreak of a disease in numbers clearly in excess of normal.
According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment:
Avian flu - An influenza virus strain that infects birds is called avian influenza or bird flu. These flu viruses occur naturally among wild birds.
Pandemic - A pandemic of influenza, or flu, occurs when a new flu virus rapidly spreads from human-to-human and country-to-country around the world. A new virus can spread rapidly because most people are not immune to it.
